PCOS or Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one of the most common disorders, which occurs in the female endocrine system. It is found in women who are in their premenopausal phase. It is characterized by multiple symptoms including hormonal imbalance, menstruation & fertility issues, and some possible physical changes in the suffering woman's body. Polycystic Ovary Syndrome leads to serious health problem such as heart diseases & diabetes if insufficient attention and treatment is given. This disease occurs in every 1 out of 15 women that can be diagnosed in the teen age years if the symptoms are being noticed and treated before it gets into something bigger and more dangerous. Hormonal imbalance is found to be the primary cause of PCOS. When one hormone gets out of balance, it makes another hormone unbalanced, and thus the process goes on. The androgens, male hormones which are produced by the ovaries start to get produced a tiny bit more than the normal ratio. This imbalance creates unwanted physical problems like skin acne.
Another problem created by POCS is the insulin resistance, due to which the body of suffering women is unable to use insulin effectively. When there is no proper use of insulin, the blood sugar level rises and with time it can develop into diabetes. Apart from acne and the blood sugar level, women suffering from PCOS also go through substantial weight gains which become difficult to put off with passing time. Facial hair get out of control and excessive while scalp starts losing thick strands of hair. Women with POCS suffer from depression, sleep troubles, fertility problems, and less than nine menstruation cycles in a year. Among the sleep troubles caused by POCS is Obstructive Sleep Apnea OSA. In OSA, there is a periodic closure of the upper airway during sleeping which causes suffocation and less breathing. Periodically disturbed breathing leads to disturbed sleeping routines and snoring. Night time sleep shortage results into day time dizziness and sleepiness; and ultimately loss of concentration.
Women who have POCS also get insomniac. Insomnia is also caused by hormonal imbalance and it makes falling asleep very difficult for women. There are undoubtedly medical treatments for these sleeping troubles but they come with one or multiple side effects. Women who in particular have sensitivities towards excessive medication should avoid sleeping pills and other such medicines. The good news is that there are food and other natural alternatives for treating sleeping problems. Some herbal supplements like Chamomile, Hops, Valerian Root, Kava Kava have been found very beneficial and do not inflict any side effects. Women with POCS and insomnia can also use herbal oils like lavender, jasmine, or sweet almond in their aromatherapy sessions. Aromatherapy is no doubt the best natural cure for sleeplessness because it helps reduce depression, physical aches, and pressure points make brain relaxed for a while, so that you can get some undisturbed sleep. Cutting down your regular sugar intake and avoiding oily food can also help.
